Meet the Gen-Y BOSS Torsion Hitch: How Torsion-Flex Delivers a Smoother Tow

If there's one hitch that defines Gen-Y, it's the BOSS. It's the flagship of the range, and it's where our patented Torsion-Flex technology does its heaviest work. The range runs from 4,000 kg right through to 7,000 kg towing capacity, so there's a BOSS to suit everything from a family caravan to a big work trailer.

Tyler from the Gen-Y Australia team walks through it here:

What Makes the BOSS Different

A standard tow hitch is a solid piece of steel. That's strong, but it means every bump, pothole and jolt passes straight through it, from the trailer into your vehicle and from your vehicle back into the trailer.

The BOSS has torsion sections built into both the top and the bottom of the hitch body. Heavy-duty rubber torsion cords sit inside those sections, held together with two 1" Grade 8 steel pivot bolts. Instead of passing the shock straight through, the hitch flexes under load and absorbs it.

Gen-Y's figures put it at around 10% of the trailer's inertia transferring through, compared with 100% through a hard connection. That's where the "up to 90% smoother ride" comes from.

What That Means on the Road

  • Less fatigue on your trailer and drawbar. Every jolt the hitch soaks up is one your drawbar, chassis and everything packed inside don't have to take.
  • Less sway and bounce. The vehicle and trailer track more independently, so the trailer isn't pushing the car around.
  • Better braking control. The load stays settled and evenly spread when you pull up.
  • A calmer cab. Less jolting for everyone in the vehicle, and less fatigue for the driver on a long haul. That matters even more when it's family, pets, horses or livestock along for the trip.

Built to Last

The BOSS is made in the USA from heavy-duty steel, precision milled and drilled. A few details make it easy to live with:

  • No airbag to maintain and no bearings to wear out. The torsion system is rubber and steel, so it's close to maintenance free.
  • One-pin height adjustment. Change the ball height in seconds.
  • Built-in mechanical tongue weight scale [CONFIRM: listed on the 4,500 kg and 7,000 kg pages but not the 4,000 kg page. Does every BOSS have it?], so you can check your ball weight and load the trailer properly.
  • Fully reversible. Use it in the drop or the rise position.
  • Warranty: 5 years on moving parts, lifetime on all other parts.

Choosing Your BOSS

There are two decisions to make: capacity and drop.

1. Capacity

Model Receiver Towing capacity Rated ball weight Drop/rise options From
BOSS 4,000 kg 2" (Class IV) 4,000 kg 400 kg 5" $2,100
BOSS 4,500 kg 2" (Class IV) 4,500 kg 500 kg 5", 7.5" or 10" $2,320
BOSS 7,000 kg 2" (Class V) 7,000 kg 900 kg 5", 7.5" or 10" $2,575
BOSS 7,000 kg 2.5" 7,000 kg [CONFIRM: 900 kg?] 5", 7.5" or 10" $2,805

As a rough guide:

  • BOSS 4,000 kg suits Australian-delivered tow vehicles like LandCruisers, Patrols and 4x4 utes towing a caravan or camper.
  • BOSS 4,500 kg suits bigger caravans, boats and horse floats, and gives you the full choice of drop heights and couplings.
  • BOSS 7,000 kg is built for full-size American trucks and the heavy end of towing: big vans, stock trailers, plant and car carriers.

Whichever you choose, your real towing limit is set by the lowest-rated part of your setup. That includes your vehicle's towing capacity, your towbar, your coupling and the trailer itself. Never exceed any of them.

2. Drop or rise

Each hole on a BOSS moves the ball about 2.5" (64mm) up or down:

  • 5" drop: 4 positions
  • 7.5" drop: 5 positions
  • 10" drop: 6 positions

The bigger drop options are there for lifted trucks and taller vehicles, where the receiver sits well above the trailer coupling.

To work out what you need:

  1. Park the vehicle and trailer on flat ground, loaded the way you normally tow.
  2. Measure from the ground to the centre of your towbar receiver.
  3. Measure from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupling.
  4. Take the difference. If the towbar is higher you need a drop; if the coupling is higher you need a rise. Add about 25mm for suspension sag.

There's a worked example on the BOSS collection page, or try the hitch finder.

Coupling Options

The BOSS works with any bumper-pull trailer, including pintle couplings. Depending on the model, you can order it with:

  • 50mm ball for standard ball couplings
  • 50/70mm Versa Ball if you tow trailers with both sizes
  • Australian Tongue (DO45) for off-road couplings
  • Australian Tongue + reducing bush (DO35) for Cruisemaster-style couplings

Pintle couplings are sold separately.

Who the BOSS Is For

If you tow regularly, tow heavy, or tow anything where the ride really matters, the BOSS is built for you:

  • Caravans and campers on long trips and rough roads
  • Horse floats and livestock trailers, where every bump reaches the animal inside
  • Boats, where a settled trailer makes the highway run and the ramp easier
  • Work and plant trailers doing daily kilometres on site roads
