The Gen-Y PHANTOM Range Has Landed in Australia: PHANTOM-X vs PHANTOM-XT

The Gen-Y PHANTOM Range Has Landed in Australia: PHANTOM-X vs PHANTOM-XT

Most of the Gen-Y range is built for the heavy end of towing: big American trucks, 7-tonne stock trailers, goosenecks. But plenty of Aussies are towing a caravan behind a Prado, a camper behind a Hilux, or a box trailer behind a RAV4, and they want the same build quality without paying for capacity they'll never use.

That's what the PHANTOM range is for. Two hitches, both rated to 3,500 kg, both made in the USA, and both the most affordable way into the Gen-Y family. They're now shipping Australia and New Zealand wide.

Watch the Gen-Y Australia team walk through both:

Why Hitch Height Matters

Before getting into the two hitches, it's worth covering why an adjustable hitch matters in the first place.

A trailer should tow as close to level as possible. If your towbar sits low and the trailer coupling sits high, or the other way around, the drawbar ends up angled. That shifts weight onto or off the tow vehicle's rear axle and makes the whole rig harder to control.

A fixed tongue gives you one height and that's it. Both PHANTOM hitches use Gen-Y's stacked tube design, so you can move the ball up or down to match your trailer. Both are also fully reversible, so they work in either the drop or the rise position.

PHANTOM-X Drop Hitch

The PHANTOM-X is the simple, no-fuss option. It's a solid drop hitch with two adjustable positions, and it comes ready to tow with a 50mm ball fitted, plus the pins and R-clips you need. There's nothing extra to buy before your first trip.

It's the right pick for everyday vehicles where the towbar sits low to the ground: your RAV4s and family SUVs. On those cars a standard tongue often leaves the drawbar pointing downhill. Flip the PHANTOM-X into the rise position and you get the extra height to bring the trailer back to level.

If you tow something with a DO35 coupling, like a Cruisemaster-equipped camper, you can add a Gen-Y Australian tongue to suit.

PHANTOM-X at a glance:

  • 3,500 kg towing capacity
  • 2" solid shank, suits 2" receivers
  • 2 adjustable positions, usable as a drop or a rise [CONFIRM: video says 50mm of adjustment, collection page says 2.5" (about 64mm). Which is correct?]
  • 50mm ball included
  • Heavy-duty steel, sandblasted and powder coated
  • Made in the USA, Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • $385

PHANTOM-XT Torsion-Flex Hitch

The PHANTOM-XT takes the same adjustable, reversible design and adds Gen-Y's patented Torsion-Flex system. It's the same technology found in the heavy-duty BOSS hitch, made lighter for medium-duty towing.

It has three adjustable positions [CONFIRM: drop/rise range. The video says 4.75", the product page says 4.25", and the collection page says 5". Pick one and update all three places.], which gives it more range than the PHANTOM-X. That suits the vehicles that sit a little taller, like the Prado, the Hilux and most of the domestic ute and 4WD wagon range.

What Torsion-Flex actually does

A standard hitch is a hard steel connection. Every bump, pothole and jolt from the trailer travels straight into your vehicle, and every jolt from your vehicle travels straight back into the trailer.

The PHANTOM-XT uses rubber torsion arms in place of that hard connection. Gen-Y's figures show only about 10% of the trailer's inertia transfers through, compared with 100% through a rigid hitch. In practice that means:

  • Up to a 90% smoother ride. The rig glides over rough roads instead of bouncing.
  • Less sway and trailer bounce. The vehicle and trailer track more independently, so you have more control.
  • Better braking control. The load stays settled and evenly spread when you pull up.
  • Less wear and tear. It cuts down the metal fatigue that hard towing puts on your trailer, your towbar and everything packed inside.

DO35 and DO45 ready

The PHANTOM-XT comes with Gen-Y's AT tongue and a reducer bush, so it's set up for a DO35 coupling straight out of the box. If you ever need to tow with a DO45, just remove the reducer bush.

PHANTOM-XT at a glance:

  • 3,500 kg towing capacity
  • 130–280 kg ideal ball weight range
  • 2" solid shank, suits 2" receivers
  • 3 adjustable positions, usable as a drop or a rise
  • AT tongue and reducer bush included, to suit DO35 and DO45
  • Torsion-Flex: up to 90% smoother ride
  • Made in the USA, Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • $1,565

Good to know: the PHANTOM-XT is not recommended for use with a weight distribution hitch. If your caravan setup relies on WDH, have a chat with the team before you buy.

PHANTOM-X or PHANTOM-XT: Which One?

PHANTOM-X PHANTOM-XT
Type Drop hitch Torsion-Flex hitch

Adjustable positions 2 3
Comes with 50mm ball AT tongue + reducer bush (DO35/DO45)
Ride cushioning None (rigid) Up to 90% smoother
Best for Low-set SUVs and cars, simple level towing Utes, 4WD wagons, caravans and campers on rough roads
Price $385 $1,565

Go with the PHANTOM-X if you mainly need to get your trailer sitting level and you want a tough, affordable hitch that just works.

Go with the PHANTOM-XT if you tow a caravan or camper over long distances or rough roads, or you tow something where a smoother ride really matters, like a horse float. If you want your rig to tow better and not just sit level, this is the one.

One rule applies to both: each hitch is rated to 3,500 kg, but your actual towing limit is set by the lowest-rated component in your setup. That includes your vehicle's towing capacity, your towbar and your coupling. Always stay within your vehicle manufacturer's limits.

Not Sure Which Height You Need?

Here's how to work it out in a couple of minutes:

  1. Park the vehicle and the trailer on flat ground, loaded the way you normally tow.
  2. Measure from the ground to the centre of your towbar receiver.
  3. Measure from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupling.
  4. Take the difference. If the towbar is higher, you need a drop. If the coupling is higher, you need a rise. Add about 25mm to allow for suspension sag.

There's a full worked example on the PHANTOM collection page. You can also run through the hitch finder.
